Vintage stomp boxes have an inimitable vibe and tone, but all too often they load down your signal, degrade your tone and have limited scope. What's more, they prove disastrously unreliable. While it's difficult to find a pedal that rivals its old-school predecessors, once in a while along comes one that achieves the impossible by offering rich, classic tone, reliability and a range of useable sounds that far exceeds what an older pedal can offer.
Our friends at Maxon have created one of these rare birds with the Rotary Phaser, a unit that combines the spirit of the past with the stamina to weather the demands of the present. Sure these capabilities come at a hefty price ($350), and most players probably won't be thrilled that this unit works only with the included 10-volt wall wart adapter, but they'll find this pedal well worth the hassle.
With controls for Speed, Depth, Feedback, and a three-position Mode selector that changes the number of stages of phase shift, the Rotary Phaser can quickly be set to recreate a wide range of classic effects with stunning accuracy. From deep, throbbing Univibe settings and swirling rotating speaker effects to more extreme sounds that conjure funky auto-wahs, jet planes swooping overhead and bizarre robotic clangor, this unit does it all with equal grace and aplomb, and all without destroying your tone when the unit is turned off.
